Literature and Psychoanalysis a seminar by Todd McGowan
Faculty Prof. Todd McGowan
Format Zoom
Description
The course applies psychoanalytic theories to the analysis of literature.
The approached critique takes into account the effects of capitalism on the subject from a psychoanalytic standpoint, especially on its desire and the expression thereof. This course will approach four literary texts (Kafka, The Trial; Woolf, Orlando; Hesse, Steppenwolf; and Goethe, Faust) via psychoanalytic theory.
The course is recommended to take in conjunction with McGowan’s Hegel Seminar.
Introducing the student to psychoanalysis as a mode of social critique via the medium of literature, the course functions as a practical application of psychoanalytic theory. It combines this theory with readings of Hegel and other philosophers to develop a critical and nuanced outlook.
